DANCE TIP (Phase 2) - Solo Left Turning Box

Do all the turns only in the fourth beat of each measure. Do not turn at all while doing the half box steps.

Thus you would dance the four measures of the figure as follows:

1) Half Box forward (no turn), then each partner independently rotates a quarter to their left on the toe. This leaves you with your trail foot free with right shoulder towards partner. If you began with man facing wall and lady facing COH, you end this measure with man facing LOD and lady facing RLOD.

2) Half Box back (no turn), then do all of the quarter left turn rotating on the toe. This leaves you with lead foot free back-to-back with your partner. (End with Man facing COH, Lady facing Wall).

3) Half Box forward (no turn), then rotate a quarter left on the toe. This leaves you with trail foot free with left shoulder towards partner. (End with Man facing RLOD, Lady facing LOD)

4) Half Box back (no turn), then rotate a quarter left on the toe. This leaves you with lead foot free and facing your partner again. (End with Man facing Wall, Lady facing COH)

Remember that a Half Box Forward is side, close, forward for the man. It is side, close, back for the lady. Do not turn when doing these three steps.

A Half Box Back is side, close, back for the man. It is side, close, forward for the lady. Do not turn when doing these three steps.

Turn only after finishing each half box and only on the toe of the foot that you took your last step with ---- do not take an additional step to turn. Do all of the quarter turn in the fourth beat of each measure.

Lead foot is man's left and lady's right.

Trail foot is man's right and lady's left. Note: I never call this the "wrong" nor the "off" foot because every other step it is the correct one that you are "on".

Hopefully the above can help put some order in doing "Solo Left Turning Boxes". This is one figure where often it seems that the dancers just go every which way when it is cued.
